Originally introduced in 2021 by music teacher Jaimeo Brown, lunch DJ sets are starting back up this school year, allowing the Branson community to enjoy fresh music every week in the commons.
With a new playlist from a different person each week, the DJ sets are a great way for the community to broaden their musical horizons.
With the DJ sets, people have the chance to share the music that they like, new and old, anonymously, since “people are shy about what kind of music they like,” Brown said.
“I like [the DJ sets] a lot. I really like the idea because rather than just people talking, we can also listen to some music and it gives a nice vibe during lunch,” said Neyla Kaul ‘28.
Community members have also been able to expand their music tastes. The DJ sets have sparked conversation and more opportunities for interaction between students and teachers.
“Many people come up to people in the arts department and ask about songs and then have conversations about music or the DJs,” said Brown.
Tahlequah Smith ‘28 said her favorite DJ set was “SoCal Asian because it was a really good playlist and it was very relaxing. Also, there are a lot of songs people know.”
On how the DJ sets came about, Brown said that they began with the idea of creating community through music.
He said, “Music really impacts how people feel. I love that we can listen to a song and it can bring us up together.”
