Boys varsity tennis is off to an excellent start to the season, with an overall record of 7-1 and an MCAL record of 5-1.
The team beat Tamalpais March 12 and had a match against Lick-Wilmerding canceled on March 18 because of heavy rain. The team is seeking their second MCAL championship in three years, following a drought dating back to 2001.
“We only lost one senior who played last year in Oliver Goldman,” said Cal Keenley ‘26. “We gained a couple freshmen who are really, really good. And I think the team is trending upwards in terms of this year.”
The team, despite the loss that Keenley mentioned, retained captains from last season, Chase Hoeveler ‘25 and James Stovell ‘25. Ishwar Jayaraman ‘25 and Tommy Higgins ‘25 are captains this year as well.

“The captains are doing their thing. I would say they’re probably the best captains we’ve had in the past couple of years,” said Keenley. “They’re really passionate about the game, and they really care a lot about their teammates. And they come up with some of the best nicknames I’ve heard in a while.”
The Bulls have experienced a big boost from a couple of ninth-graders on the team.
“They’ve done an amazing job so far,” said Stovell. “You know, they’re playing with a lot of confidence, playing with a lot of fire.”
The team still has big games left this season which will help determine their standing in both MCAL and NCS.
“We’re going to play Redwood at least one more time, we’re going to play MC one more time, we’re going to play University, and those are sort of the three big matches, big rivalries that people should come out to,” Stovell said.
Stovell has one clear goal for his team for the rest of the season: “Win as much as we can.”
