As we enter an era in our country where politicians have almost complete autonomy over the people, Model United Nations programs nationally play an important role in introducing the future politicians of our country to the government world.
With college students and other volunteers leading the way, students have the opportunity to dive into real world global issues and practice critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills.
Earlier this spring semester, Branson’s Model UN team traveled to Washington, D.C., for the National Model United Nations–DC conference, and ended up bringing home both a Best Delegate award, received by Model UN leader Reese Furhman ‘25, and a new passion for global peace and relationships.
“We’re starting to make a name for ourselves,” said Furhman about the Branson team. “Branson has not really had that sort of success in Model UN before, [but] our club is also growing.”
What started as a smaller, less competitive club, has now been revitalized to become a successful, award-winning team.
Along with the conference, provided the incredible opportunity by a Branson alum to tour the Capitol, the Model UN team also enjoyed sightseeing and a deep dive into historical education within our nation’s capital. With Malik Ali, a Branson history teacher, providing context during their visits, the group explored the Smithsonian museums such as the National Museum of African-American History and Culture.
“Malik gave us a lot of history with the exhibits, which was awesome,” said Furhman.
The group also had time to bond over D.C.’s delicious food at restaurants during their stay.
Last year, the Branson team attended a Model UN conference in New York City.
“We actually went to see a show on Broadway,” said club adviser and math teacher Paul McCarthy. “We took people [to see] Wicked and Six. I took some to see Six with me, but there were a few that had never seen Wicked so they went with Mr. [David] Hanson.”
From touring the Capitol to committee meetings to Broadway shows and more, Branson’s Model UN club offers an array of experiences and opportunities to meet new people.
