Last year, the Branson boys lacrosse team did not compete in the Marin County Athletic League, mostly due to a lack of players. This season, the team has gained new players and will re-enter the league, competing against other MCAL teams.
“[Last year] we were on the brink of not even having a team, so we decided to not compete in MCALs,” said Bennett Clancy ‘25, a team captain.
Henry Raz ‘27 said because of their exclusion from MCAL, the team “basically played all friendly matches last season.”
Now, the team is stronger. Raz said, “I think the team looks better. We have two freshmen who are looking pretty good and we have a few juniors who are joining us this year for the first time.”
But even with the new players, the team’s season has been off to a rocky start. They currently have a 0-5 record. Andrew Murr ‘25 said, “We joke that we call ourselves the lacrosse team of doom and despair.”
Although the past few seasons for the team have lacked a certain degree of success, their camaraderie is unmatched. Murr and Raz both joined lacrosse as ninth-graders and loved it.
Raz had never played before his first year at Branson, and got injured last season, but is still coming back to play this year.
Murr said, “Lacrosse helped me make friendships and branch out. It’s a team that focuses on collaboration, playing together and working hard.” He added, “I feel like that’s been carried through all the way up until now, my senior year.”
While they haven’t been off to the strongest start, Clancy predicts they will win some games.
“Archie Williams, Lowell, Bay and Urban are all very winnable games,” he said.
Raz agrees. “We’ll get wins,” he said. “Even last year we got some wins.”
The boys lacrosse team does not have exceedingly high expectations for their transition back into MCALs, but they are hopeful.
Clancy said, “I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful we can win some games, I’m hopeful for this season.”
