On September 26, the Branson community, joined by the parents of the class of 2026, gathered to celebrate the senior class and mark the beginning of the school year. Featuring performances from the Branson Singers, Jazz Ensemble, and the Branson Rock Band, as well as speeches from Branson staffulty members and senior class representatives, Convocation celebrated the Branson community and set intentions for the year ahead.
This year, the Branson tradition was centered around the Class of 2026, commemorating the bittersweet beginning of their final year at Branson.
“I think it’s a great way to start the year. It really sets off the tone for the year and creates a sense of community, and welcomes in the new freshman,” said senior Maya Lehman ‘26. “It felt very full circle, because I remember my freshman year watching Convocation and looking up to all of the seniors. Now it finally feels kind of weird to be the people that the freshmen are looking up to, but also kind of sad knowing that in eight months we’re not going to be at Branson anymore.”
Convocation welcomes and inspires the new members of the Branson community, uniting the student body and offering first-time viewers a glimpse into Branson’s traditions.
“I think that it was just very like beautiful to see how loved and appreciated the seniors are by all of the staff, and how they’re such a focal point in our community.” said first-time Convocation attendee Pip Arnot ‘29. “As a freshman, it made me really excited for the next four years and all the traditions I’ll get to be a part of.”
During the “sentimental” ceremony, as described by Cat Howell ‘26, the Branson community had the pleasure of hearing from one of our faculty members, Percival Barretto-Ko, who was nominated by the Class of 2026 to speak at the special occasion.
Mr. Baretto-Ko’s speech was praised as “phenomenal” by Lehman, who noted its message: “I just think it was very well put – to put your passions over achievements”.
When asked what message he hoped to leave with students, Mr. Barretto-Ko shared how he hoped to inspire students to hold meaningful goals that aren’t solely defined by their economic success.
“I think the big thing for me is really understanding what a life of purpose means, and to redefine what success is to them” said Mr. Barretto-Ko.
Mr. Baretto-Ko’s guidance, which he hoped students would remember, was very well received by the Branson community, earning a standing ovation initiated by the student body.
“I was just warmed by the reception and how the message resonated with not just the students, although that was the main intent, but also parents who are facing you know, themselves in a similar situation and faculty, as well” Baretto-Ko said.
The special occasion also featured debut musical performances by the Branson Singers, Jazz Ensemble, and the Rock Band, adding excitement and energy to the ceremony.
“It was fun to listen to all that music,” said Zeke Powell ‘28. “My favorite part was probably the Branson Rock Band and the Branson singers. I really liked all of the music that they played.”
