Physics substitute teacher Dan Carroll is leaving Branson at the end of the semester.
During his time at the school, he has made lasting impressions on students and colleagues through his approach to teaching and engagement in school activities. Carroll said he likes teaching high school because he enjoys thinking of ways to challenge students about how to understand complex topics.
“I like interacting with young people, and they have great ideas. I learn lots of interesting things from my students,” Carroll said.
Carroll has also been involved in Branson’s extracurricular activities.
“I’ve really enjoyed watching the volleyball games … and seeing what a great volleyball team we have. Last year, I really liked going to the rock band show … that was great,” Carroll said.
Carroll has built many strong relationships with both the students in his classes and in his circle of colleagues. One of his favorite memories was meeting with his co-workers from the science department.
“When I first came here, I had a meeting with the science teachers. We were on a little retreat. It was at Carl Ma’s house, and we made traditional hotpot. It was delicious,” Carroll said. “But pretty much the memory of every day [at Branson] is great.”
Carroll notes that the Branson faculty and students left a warm impression on him.
“I’ve really enjoyed myself. I’m so happy people have made me feel so welcome, [and like] I’ve been here forever,” he said.
Carroll has a quote by Gonzo from the Muppet Movie he believes best describes his experience at Branson. “There is not a word yet for old friends who just met.”
Though students are just starting their Branson journey, Carroll’s is coming to an end, at least for now.
“If Branson needs another person for a temporary basis, I will … be available,” Carroll said.
